WHAT IS WAKE UP AMERICA AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

WAKE UP AMERICA (WUA) is a non-profit corporation and a private charity organized under the laws of the State of Florida and Section 501(C) (3) of the federal internal revenue code; all contributions of food, goods and services are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law. The organization was founded in 1992 whose sole purpose is to help supply food to those in need and eliminate food waste.  WAKE UP AMERICA (WUA) has over 30 volunteers from the communities of Pine Lakes and Lake Fairways, North Fort Myers, Florida.

As the number of hungry and homeless people increase, the amount of government funds is diminishing and social service agencies and small suppliers do not have the time and resources to develop alternative food sources.

WAKE UP AMERICA (WUA) was established to act as a link between the suppliers of leftover food products and the nearby agencies that can best use the food donations.  WUA is:

  • Primarily the transportation network

  • Recruiting & organizing volunteers who pick up food from donors

  • Delivers at no cost to the agencies that feed the hungry

  • WUA covers all associated costs;

    • Gas, vehicles, trailers and maintenance

    • Vehicle registration, insurance

  • A VOLUNTEER GROUP WITH NO PAID STAFF

Donated food is picked up seven days a week from six Publix stores in Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Punta Gorda and twice weekly from a Pepperidge Farm warehouse in Port Charlotte.  All donated food items (bakery products, bread, desserts and produce) are then delivered to a number of needy organizations.

Wake Up America Pine Lakes and Lake Fairways raise funds to operate the vehicles and trailers they use to pick up and transport the food.  They are costly to operate; ie fuel and maintenance.  They rely on donations and fundraising events to offset these costs.  However they can only continue their mission with contributions from those who are concerned with the well-being of the needy.
